I.OSA Director Report
Flooding in Southeast Michigan
I’m sure many of you have heard of the extreme flooding that occurred in Southeast Michigan. OSA has been working closely with the State Emergency Operations Center to monitor the situation. Steve Betterly and Sherri King in our office have been working closely with the AAA’s in the impacted areas to ensure older adults are safe and have access to food. In addition, staff from Licensing and Regulatory Affairs is on-site at long-term care facilities to make sure individuals are safe. OSA and the AAA’s will continue to monitor the situation and assist individuals as necessary. Kudos to Steve, Sherri and everyone involved in the aging network for their willingness to assist older adults in their time of need.
FY 2015 Annual Implementation Planning Update
It’s that time of year again – time for Annual Implementation Plan review! Just a friendly reminder, the Commission meeting will start at 9 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 15. We are starting earlier to give each AAA 30 min. to present their plan and answer questions. During the Aug. 15 CSA meeting AAA 1-A, 1-C, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 will be reviewed. The rest will be taken up on Sept. 19. A big shout out to all the AAA directors and their staff for all the work they put into these plans.
Ombudsman Program Update
As you know, the State Long Term Care Ombudsman Program RFP process closed on July 30. No bids were received so the program is staying in-house until further notice. We can discuss in more detail at the meeting, but it is business as usual!
DIFS Partnering with Aging Network to Launch Reinventing MI Retirement Toolkit
During his special message on aging, Gov. Snyder urged the Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) to create a financial toolkit for older adults to help them plan for retirement and reach financial security as they age.
On Oct. 20 DIFS will hold one large kickoff event in Troy and several other mini-events all across Michigan to launch the toolkit. It will be marketed to adults age 50 and older. OSA has been working with our aging network partners to identify sites and do marketing and outreach in each planning and service area that will host each event. Support for Seniors Strong during the Primary Election
Of the more than 50 senior service millages in Michigan up for approval or rejection in Michigan, all but one passed during the Aug. 5 primary. Keeler Township in Van Buren County was the only millage that failed.
Integrated Care – MI Health Link
OSA, in partnership with the Medical Services Administration (MSA), is applying for a CMS grant to provide beneficiary support through outreach, education, and counseling so that each person can make an informed decision about MI Health Link and choosing an Integrated Care Organization. The goal is for the Medicare Medicaid Assistance Program (MMAP) and the Aging and Disability Resource Collaborations to work with enrollees to ensure they receive information that is unbiased, objective and understandable by highly-trained, trusted sources.
